Cowan V.2 p.19 (under Arnout); Howes L5. Wheat 75, note. Monaghan 884D. Nasatir p.431. Sabin 38450. Kurutz 386: "La Carrieres, during his peregrinations, visited San Francisco and the mining region. He provided descriptions of various ethinic groups, including the Irish, told of the high prices, and commented on the hotels and the general violence that best the new city. Thereafter, he went on a tour that took him to San Jose (when it served as the state capital), Sacramento, Stockton, and the Southern MInes and Mariposa. On this tour, La Carrieres described mining society, the Mexicans and French, mining techniques and women.
