About This Item
Chez les Frères de Bure, Paris., 1778. Sixième édition. Small octavo. pp [xiv], 496. 8 engraved plates, four of which are folding, otherwise smaller textual wood engravings. Period binding of full calf, raised bands, gilt decorated spine. Marbled endpapers. First published in 1749 this was a connoisseur's guide to the chief artistic and architectural monuments of Paris, with accounts of the leading academic and scientific organisations of the city. The last edition appeared in 1780, the French Revolution bringing an end to such extravagances. Spine and cover edges rubbed. Lacking title-label on spine. Good, internally bright, copy.
