London: printed by H.M. for B. Lintot and R. Gosling in Fleet-Street, A. Bettesworth on London-Bridge, and W. Innys in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1712. First edition. 8vo. (24, including errata), 456, (10, index), (2, ads) pp. With a folding frontispiece map of the world depicting California as an island, plus 19 other maps and plates. On Capt. Woodes Rogers's privateering expedition around the world with two ship[s, the "Duke" and the "Duchess," Cooke was second captain of the "Duchess." The account he records of Selkirk's adventure is said to have been the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe." Streeter sale 2427: "This volume was issued separately, with no indication, as in the second edition, that it was Volume I of an issue in two volumes, but both Sabin and Wagner incorrectly enter it as Vol. I of a two-volume edition. The main pagination of Vol. I of the two-volume edition in 432 pp., instead of 456 pp. as here." Howes C-33 concurs: "Issued hurriedly in one volume, with the voyage home compressed into the final chapter, in order to be on the market before the appearance of a rival publisher's account of the same voyage by Woodes Rogers. More leisure permitted for the second edition an amplification of that final chapter into a second volume ... at the same time deleted from the second edition of Vol. I." Some toning to text, but maps and plates very good. Contemporary paneled calf (rubbed and worn, joints very worn, but holding, spine ends worn, corners and edges bumped). Housed in a custom cloth slipcase, with chemise, leather spine label. (62028) (9768).
