San Francisco: The Grabhorn Press, 1936. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Dean, Mallette. One of 550 copies, octavo size, 309 pp. This diary, written by the young Lewis H. Garrard, includes contemporary descriptions of Native Americans, traders, mountain men, with their dress, behavior, and speech, and also includes legendary characters such as Kit Carson. Garrard attended the trial of some of the Mexicans and Pueblos who had revolted against U.S. rule of New Mexico, newly captured in the Mexican-American War, and wrote the only eye-witness account of the trial and hanging of six convicted men (N. B. info from WIkipedia). This edition of his diary was published by the Grabhorn Press, one of the most highly renowned private presses in America in the twentieth century, run by brothers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn; with woodcuts by Mallette Dean, well-known for the beauty and elegance of his work. This book took the Grabhorns seven months to make, it was the third volume of "the Third and last series of Rare Americana".

Description:
Norman, Oklahoma, U.S.A.: University of Oklahoma Press, 1987. Ninth Printing . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 4 3/4" x 7 1/2. 298 Pages. No marks noted. This book is Volume 5 in The Western Frontier Library and is a reprint of the original 1850 edition. ln 1846 young Lewis H. Garrard traveled into the wild Rocky Mountain West and left this fresh and vigorous account, which A. B. Guthrie, Jr. said contains the genuine article -- the Indian, the trader, the mountain man, their dress and behavior and speech and the country and climate they lived in. Into the adventure come such great names as Kit Carson, Lucien Maxwell, Narcisse Beaubien, and Jim Beckwourth. The general reader will relish the chapter entitled Wah-to-yah, the Indian name for the Twin Spanish Peaks, which dominate the landscape north of Raton Pass. This deals not with the majestic mountains themselves but with the imagined regions beneath where the garrulous John Hatcher met the Devil which must be the most hilarious tale of all.
