Martin Secker & Warburg Limited, 1980; "First published in England..." stated, no additional printings indicated; [iv], 156pp. First printing of the British edition, which preceded the South African edition in publication. Good+ hardcover in good+ dust jacket. Faint liquid staining apparent on bottom edges of boards and page block, faint waviness at bottom margin of pages up to pg. 7. Binding is tight, sturdy, and square; small surface abrasion at bottom edge of front board, gentle bump at foot of spine, else wear to black cloth boards is very minor; gilt titling on spine remains bright and bold, interior text also very good; light foxing to page block edges. Minor edgewear to unclipped (£5.95) dust jacket, toning around edges of interior flaps; very faint liquid damage apparent on verso; jacket arrives wrapped in protective mylar. A presentable copy of this scarce first edition. Additional photos available

Synopsis

Waiting for the Barbarians is a novel by the South African-born author J. M. Coetzee, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003. The novel was published in 1980 and is regarded as one of Coetzee's finest pieces of writing. It was chosen by Penguin for its series Great Books of the 20th Century and won both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize for fiction.
