About This Item

New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1871 First edition, first issue binding (binding A). Burroughs' first regularly published book after a self-published essay on Whitman (1867). Small octavo (6¾x4½ inches). Pp. iv, 231. Title printed in black and red. Publisher's green beveled cloth decoratively stamped in black and gold, yellow coated ends. Original owner's name and date in pencil on front free endpaper. Bookplate on inner cover. Small repaired nick to fore-edge of front board, but a fine, clean and bright copy. Housed in chemise and matching cloth slipcase, leather label. An exceptional copy, bright and clean. Signed on the front free endpaper in pencil by the original owner, "Edward Tompkins, Oakland, July 24, 1871." This is a very early copy based on the penciled date as BAL states this title was listed May 15, 1871. [BAL: 2135]..
