"Really intense and progressive people count the calories in carrots and the vitamins in veal and advise us to live on raw cabbage.This book is not for them,but for the bad lots who openly admit that they like the pleasures of the table and who enjoy life".

John Major, London.,1824. SECOND MAJOR EDITION. Illustrated with 14 copper engraved plates and several woodcuts throughout the text. Two small patches of browning affecting the top outer corner of ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy in fine nineteenth century binding by Thomson of Exeter, with binders ticket on front paste down. Full tan calf, raised bands, compartments fully gilt. Red title label, gilt. Boards with double blind ruled and one gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. School prize plate on front paste down shows that this copy was given as a prize in January 1842. Previous owners name(dated 1881) and ink name stamp on blank endpapers. Front hinge neatly repaired. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in an attractive nineteenth century binding.:

A very good copy in an attractive contemporary leather binding. Half black morocco. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled and lettered in gilt. Red title label, ruled and lettered in gilt. Morocco grained cloth on boards. Coated yellow endpapers. All edges gilt. A lovely copy.:

The value and collectibility of this volume, unusually lies more with who the printers were than who the authors were. 8vo size red marbled boards; 67 deckle edge pages to this thin volume with decorations at chapters. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Russian-born Polish English writer. Well respected, well received, he was the author of many novels and short stories. Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) was an English author who collaborated with Joseph Conrad on three of Conrad's novels. Ford was also a star in the literary firmament. Solid First Edition, 1885. Green silk cloth boards with gold decoration on cover, black stamped lettering on cover, gold stamped lettering on spine. Light soiling to cloth. Tiny spots of wear to corners and top and bottom spine edges. Binding is tight & square, no cracking. Pages and edges are clean. Chocolate brown endpapers; small chip to top edge of front fixed endpaper, small mark where bookplate had been and has fallen off. Color frontispiece illustration with tissue guard. With numerous illustrations from the author's sketches and descriptions by Mr. John B. Gibbs. All six maps (including fold-outs) are present and in excellent condition. 536 pages with index, plus 4 pages of publisher's advertising at rear of book..

Fine signed binding by Alain Lobstein in slip case matching the end-papers. Number 1 of 20 copies on japon printed in red and black with a double suite of the etchings printed on Japon and Hollande. Text in French. 90 pages plus suites. Spine very slightly darkened. Fine copy.

Finely bound in tan morocco, gilt tooled borders, gilt tooled spine in six compartments with leather labels, tooled edges and inner dentelles. Marbled edges and endpapers, index. A thin strip has been trimmed from the top edge of the title pages (removing a previous owner's name). A handsome set. Notes by George Gilfillan. (Poetry, Poetry).

Small octavo (11x16mm) hand bound collection of bookplate facsimiles. The spine is cloth with a small paper title and the boards are sturdy fiberboard. The 30+ unpaginated pages are secure in the binding. Each page has a design attached, some have been glued down. Most of these bookplates are black and white. Great reference material. Many of the facsimile plates have text on their backside leading me to suppose they were taken from a periodical featuring Ex Libris plates.
