New York: Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Near Fine. First edition. Signed by Algren, inscribed to former owners on front endpaper in the year of publication. Very Good+ with toning to top of cloth, "X" stamp on half-title (review copy?), hinge at page 24 a little free. Near Fine dust jacket is a little rubbed and worn, unclipped. An attractive signed true first of Algren's hard-boiled novel of New Orleans in the 1930s, made famous by the Lou Reed song, but also well-known for its quotes: "Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mom's. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own.".
