About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/VG.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated, white background with subject's name in multi-coloured (red, yellow, blue and green) capital letters to front panel of dw/dj and subject's b/w portrait photographic illustrated rear panel of dw/dj,with other black lettering; with some shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - along with some chipping, nicks and closed tears.A small proportion of foot of spine/ backstrip of the dw/dj is missing (approx 1/2" deep and 4/5" wide) - thereby partially affecting publisher's printed name - with FELD & COLSON missing. This is the only significant loss, the other tears and nicks are without any loss.Three corners lightly chipped/rubbed,two tears to front panel's spine/backstrip's gutter's edge - top+bottom - the bottom tear showing signs of ghost residue of an earlier sellotape repair.Top+ fore-edges generally bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original, plain red cloth boards with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers with no off-set foxing from dw/dj's inner flaps.UK,8vo HB +dw/dj,1st edn,10-384pp [paginated] includes foreword,11 chapters, acknowledgements,a bibliographical note and an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages and dedication. Before Disney, animation was crude and ineffectual. The inspired invention of Mickey Mouse on a trans-continental train ride eventually led to the first full length fairy tale,'Snow White',which gave the cartoon today's dimensions. The Disney legend - that of the go-getter from the Midwest, the world's favourite uncle,a pied-piper who shared his dreams with the world - is persuasive.Yet the actual story is more interesting, and during the two years Richard Schickel worked on 'Walt Disney' he found he was uncovering not just the truth about Disney, but also about the society which formed him: in many ways Disney is a microcosm of modern America.Disney was a businessman of genius, who took all-or-nothing gambles at every stage of his career. Richard Schickel cites his 'four Cs' - curiosity, confidence, courage, consistency - and adds a fifth - control.Disney tinkered with people as he did with movies; he attempted to create a magic kingdom, but was haunted by the fear that the organisation might slip out of his control. Disneyland,'an extension of man in the McLuhanesque sense of the word',is a living monument to Walt Disney and his ideas of the true, beautiful and good; a projection on a gigantic scale of his personality; and a model for the global village. Richard Schickel was a recognised authority on films as well as other aspects of popular culture and social history, having been the principal movie critic for Life Magazine for three years (then 1968). Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk ,for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
