1900. [inscribed by the author] With Illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy. Decorations by Margaret Armstrong. New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1900. Original green cloth decorated in dark green, light green, red and white.

First Edition of this tale by Paul Leicester Ford, published two years before he was murdered by his brother, at the age of forty. (His brother Malcolm during the 1880s had been the greatest amateur athlete in the country, but was disinherited by his parents because he chose athletics over a "real job"; in 1902 he came to ask for money from his brother Paul -- who was anything but athletic, having a childhood spinal injury that stunted his growth --, was refused, shot him dead, then killed himself.) This is one of the more highly-sought Margaret Armstrong books, since she provided not only the cover design but also the margin decoration for each page. The other illustrator, Howard Chandler Christy, is also collected today. This is a near-fine copy (very minor rubbing at the spine ends). Gullans & Espey 95, binding A (also shown in color on Plate 6). This copy is inscribed by the author and his wife on the front free endpaper. It appears that she wrote first, "with the affectionate thoughts of Grace" [Grace Kidder and Paul Leicester Ford married that year]. Then Paul (with a different ink) added before her inscription "Miss Estes" and after her inscription "& Paul | Day of Publication
