About This Item

Ivor Nicholson & Watson. GEORGE, David Lloyd  The War Memoirs of David Lloyd George London: Ivor Nicholson & Watson, 1933-1936 8vo., 6 vols; publisher's blue cloth lettered in gilt to spine, with author's facsimile signature in gilt to upper board; top edge stained blue; in the original unclipped dust jackets (21/- net.) featuring a photograph taken by Howard Coster; errata slips in vols I as called for; together with numerous captioned plates on glossy paper; frontispieces featuring illustrations taken from Punch, Wartime advertisements, and other sources; cloth occasionally scuffed, with some compression to spine ends; spotting to outer edge and gutters of prelims; endpapers occasionally browned and offset; some rubbing to ffep of Vol II resulting in some abrasion; lovely condition overall,  very good in the scarce original dust jackets which are creased and chipped to edges with some closed tears and loss, particularly to spine tips; Vol II in particularly good condition, perhaps sometime folded and placed inside the book (fold marks, retaining much of its original brightness); tape repairs to both rectos and versos; small nick to upper panel of Vol III appearing in the centre of Lloyd George's forehead; similar nick to Vol IV, this time affecting his collarbone; Vol V scratched; unusual thus.  First edition set, which comes complete with an original publisher's bookmark, receipt from John & Edward Bumpus, Ltd. (booksellers to his majesty the King), and a signed card from the author and his wife, loosely tipped-in to volume I. David Lloyd George served as Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922. A Liberal, he is remembered today for his social reform policies, and in particular his introduction of the National Insurance act, as well as his part in the Paris Peace conference and negotiating the establishment of the Irish Free State. Born in Manchester to Welsh parents, his early political work focused on a blend of liberal ideas with a focus on Wales; in particular, he campaigned for the disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales and equality for labourers and tenant farmers. An MP for Caernarvon Boroughs for 55 years, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1908. During the First World War, Lloyd George was pivotal in strengthening the UK's finances. He became Minister of Munitions and in 1916 was appointed the Secretary of State for war. It was later that year, he took over from Asquith as PM. He established a smaller war cabinet, introduced rationing, and approved the battle of Passchendaele, which resulted in a huge number of casualties. After the war ended, he played a major part in the Paris Peace Conference, and negotiated the Irish Free State in 1921.  The War Memoirs covers a hugely important period in the life of 'The Man who won the War', and gives unique insight into the political discussions, figures, and personalities which Lloyd George had to navigate during his time in office.  Scarce in the dust jackets, even more so with the related ephemera. . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1933.
