[3], iv-xxi, [1], 25-460, [4] pp. Blue cloth with black decorations on the front board and spine, gold lettering and decorations on the front board and spine; all edges marbled. Floral endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated by a fold-out map of the location of the different campaigns, a frontispiece, and eighteen additional plates. The plates depict the commanders of the campaigns, the last photograph ever taken of General George Custer, and three different Native American men: a scout, the Lakota Chief Gall, and the Lakota Chief Rain-in-the-Face, the man who killed General Custer. Howes F-136. A firsthand account of the Dakota Wars, with eye-witness reports of Major General Crook's decisions in command, descriptions of graphic war imagery, Finerty's interactions with Lakota people, and other historical moments. A sharp copy. A touch of wear to the extremities and a contemporary name on the first blank leaf.
