New York: James Miller, 1854. unbound. Engraving. Uncolored. Image measures 18" x 15.25". Lovely circa 1833 portrait of Washington crossing the Delaware features George Washington dressed in military attire astride a rearing horse. In his right hand he holds a telescope while his left hand holds the reins. The horse wears ornate tack with the letter 'W' and an eagle and decorative headgear. In the backround in top left and bottom right soldiers can be seen marching forward and rowing across the Delaware River. The print is in good condition with minor overall toning and foxing. Original plate mark is visible. Minor verso repair near left margin, not affecting printed image. Issued by Humphrey Phelps. Humphrey Phelps was an important publisher active in the mid 19th century. He worked independently as well as in partnership with Ensign and Thayer and issued many guides and maps of New York City and United States. This print is a nice example of his work.
