WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL ADDRESS TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES MDCCXCVI by WASHINGTON, George - 1913

Edward Robeson Taylor's copy, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. #63 of a limited edition of 440 copies, printed at The Riverside Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cloth-backed boards with a front cover title label. 8 1/2" x 12 1/2". A unique copy. This was originally a gift from Mrs. Taylor to her husband for his birthday in 1914, and bears this inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper under a photograph of Dr. Taylor: "On the Occasion of the Birthday of Edward Robeson Taylor--my noble husband--this volume is lovingly presented.September 24, 1914." Laid in is (1) a poem dated Fegruary 17, 1922, in manuscript entitled "Daphne", "Inscribed to Dr. Albert B. McKee" (purportedly signed in ink by Edward Robeson Taylor, although it may have been handwritten by his wife); and, (2) a letter dated August 27, 1924, from Mrs. Taylor to Dr. McKee, presenting this book to Dr. McKee. Dr. Taylor died on July 5, 1923, and was visited during his last illness by Dr. McKee. The letter states, inter alia, "It may seem strange to you but it is none-the-less true, that above all his medical associates, you came with the most spontaneous regularity and how affectionately he regarded you, I am quite sure you are unaware. Your last visit to him was on Washington's Birthday 1923 I very distinctly recall, when he was far from strong but had insisted we carry out our usual custom of a patriotic ceremony together. In memory of him and of your coming I am sending you this finely printed copy of the immortal address, which volume is one of but a few I am removing from the collection which I am giving to his childres." Mrs. Taylor then refers to placing the aforementioned photograph in the book. Edward Robeson Taylor was a physician, lawyer, and Dean of the Hastings College of Law. He was held in such high esteem by the citizens of San Francisco, that he was appointed San Francisco's 28th Mayor following the 1907 graft trials which dealt with the corruption exposed by the 1906 earthquake and fire.
