The Watch on Christmas-Eve

by CHRISTMAS - THOMAS NAST) Nast, Thomas (illus)

Condition: See description

01-01- 1876.. Wood engraving, black and white double page from Harper's Weekly January 1, 1876. Image size 21 x 14 inches on sheet 22 x 16, centrefold as issued. Several short archivally repaired edge tears at upper and lower edge, spot at upper right of image area (not very noticeable as it looks like part of the design), overall very good condition. Thomas Nast, most well known in his day as a political cartoonist and the originator of such symbols as the Republican Elephant and the Democratic Donkey, also developed our image of Santa Claus. Taking the stiff, unsmiling Saint Nicholas image from Europe, Nast turned him into the fat, jolly, pipe smoking creature that gives so much pleasure to children around the world today. In this image, parents peek in as their children wait by the fireplace to catch a glimpse of Santa (not visible yet!). .
