1881 Saunier Watchmaker's Handbook Illustrated Clocks Watches Horology Sundials

Claudius Saunier's 'Watchmaker's Handbook' is one of the most notable 19th-century books on modern horology and watch-making. Saunier published this work to enhance the skills and opportunities for the ordinary 'watch-jobber' and repairman in hopes of reducing the number of poorly made watches in 19th-century France. Originally written in French, this work provides explanations of practical methods of watchmaking, necessarily skills, and an imploring of a knowledge base rooted in geometry, mathematics, and art instruments.

This rare 1881 English edition was published by Tripplin and Rigg, illustrated with numerous wood and copper engravings.

1836 AFRICA 1ed Lander Niger River Exploration Illustrated Maps Slavery

Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.
The specifics of the journey were written and published under various titles, including 'The Travels of Richard and John Lander'. This work is a fascinating account of African culture, geography, and 19th-century exploration. This 1836 first edition includes nine fine, full-page engravings, including maps and views of local tribes.

Description:
1842 William Paley Natural Theology Christian Apologetics Science Philosophy
A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. Significantly influenced by naturalist John Ray's work, Paley further developed Ray's ideas by proposing that the oft-observed complex adaptations seen in plants and animals were evidence of benevolent divine design. Notably, this work is also the origin of the "watchmaker analogy" a now, well-known, and commonly used teleological argument.
This rare, illustrated edition includes the highly-desired companion collection of 40 engraved plates by James Paxton that were originally independently published in 1826.

1889 Civil War Secret Service Wilkes Booth Lincoln Assassination Baker Military

A beautiful, decorative first edition of the history of "The United States Secret Service." Other important events discussed include Wilson's Raid, Abraham Lincoln speeches, organization of the First District Cavalry, role of women in the Civil War and more.

The most interesting chapter, however, is the chapter on famous assassinations throughout history including:

• Julius Caesar
• James I of England
• Marat, the French Revolution leader
• Alexander of Russia
• Abraham Lincoln

The portion on Abraham Lincoln features an engraving of John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's assassin, being killed in a tobacco barn by Richard Garrett. Other engravings relating to Booth include him crossing the Potomac and his secret burial. This book… Read More

Description:
1715 Blaise PASCAL Pensees Christian Apologetic Pascal's Wager French Philosophy
"Men despise religion. They hate it and are afraid it may be true. The cure for this is first to show that religion is not contrary to reason, but worthy of reverence and respect. Next make it attractive, make good men wish it were true, and then show that it is."
– Pascal, Pensees
Blaise Pascal's thoughts, organized as "Pensees," were written as a collection of writings on theology and philosophy. 'Pensees' was a culmination of all of Pascal's non-mathematic discoveries and ideas which ultimately led him to a life of religious asceticism. He defended Christianity in this work. In doing so, it 'became one of the most famous Christian books in history.' (Keller, Gospel Coalition). 'Pascal was aware that, very often, we see only what we want to see' (Morris, 145) and because of that, he hoped to be able to 'convince man to overcome the natural reluctance many feel toward religion.' The concept of "Pascal's Wager" stems… Read More
