New York: Harper & Brothers, 1897. Hardy's last published novel. rewritten from an earlier serialization. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition. Dark green cloth binding, with a gilt decoration on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; frontis illustration, 339 pages, map of Wessex, and two pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Endpapers foxed, some spotting to edges, mild bumps, wear to foot of the spine. Contemporary library label on the front paste-down. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. Illus. by H. MacBeth-Raeburn.
