First book of this werewolf trilogy, followed by The Angel of Pain (1991) and The Carnival of Destruction (1994). Apocalyptic horror novel concerning occultist Jacob Harkender, his ward Gabriel Gill, and the surviving members of an ill-fated 1872 Egyptian expedition that encountered a variety of supernatural forces among the tombs, including a sphinx battling a werewolf. A further example of Stableford's project of reconstructing then universe so that the classic tropes and motifs of horror fiction fit the demands of scientific rationalism.
