Respined with original spines laid on. Corners bumped, some spotting to cloth. Labels of former owner and printer on front pastedowns. Front hinge cracking internally in each volume. Some pages have rough edges from when cut. Vol. I half title and tissue guard loosening. Tear in p. v. Best known as a writer of boys' adventure novels, W. H. G. Kingston also wrote travel books. He and his wife Agnes spent their honeymoon in Canada, allowing him to acquire the background for many of his later novels. This travelogue explores much of what is now southern Ontario and Quebec including our very own London, which is "as desirable an inland place of residence as any in Canada" (vol. II p. 2).

Second vol. has frontispiece and three vignettes. Purple cloth. Spines faded with small tears in ends. Bookplates on front pastedowns and inscriptions on front endpapers. Occasional small tear or thumb mark. Tape repair vol. II p. 282. Vol. II cracked at pp. 34-35. Paper darkening.
In the first volume, the author leaves England, arrives in New York, travels to Canada and reaches northern Ontario. In Volume II the author "wanders" all over what is now southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Two paragraphs in vol. II describe our own London, Ontario, "the largest commercial town in the interior of the country" (p. 2). Lots of interesting commentary accompanies the descriptions, such as "Enlightened people at home are getting over the old feelings which animated them with regard to the colonies and colonists; but the uneducated and ignorant of all classes still cannot divest themselves of the notion that colonies are wild regions and colonists barbarians."
