Published under the direction of The committee of general literature and education, Appointed by the society for promoting Christian knowledge. London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge; Sold at the depositories: 77, Great Queen Street, Lincoln’s Inn Fields; 4, Royal Exchange; 48, Piccadilly; And by all booksellers, N.D. [but post 1872, and probably 1873 or 1874 - v. note]. 24pp., Demy 18mo, in sixes; sewn as a single gathering into plain white paste-down end-papers, glazed lilac wrappers, cut flush, printed outside in black (the back wrapper with type ornaments), left free at spine; free end-papers and half-title not called for; wood-engraved frontispiece; pp.24. Owner’s signature neatly written in ink on front pastedown; two faint embrowned outlines on corners of final page of text where protective over-wrapper put on by owner and secured to itself with strips of gummed paper has been removed; otherwise a fine copy. Rare. Juvenile. Denominated ‘Class 2’ on the front wrapper. Dated primarily from the form of the imprint: 48 Piccadilly having been introduced to replace the 16, Hanover Street address in 1872, and commas [re-]introduced after the street numbers, as here, a year or two later. A later printing. COPAC records copies at Birmingham and V & A Libraries only, the latter having the Hanover Street address and the printers’ imprint Richard Clay. The printers’ imprint on the present copy reads: ‘Printed by Truscott, Son, & Simmons, Suffolk-lane, City.’ This form of the imprint of a firm later known as Jas. Truscott & Son appears to have been used at least fom 1859 to 1874, and since a similar volume from the same source could be dated from external evidence 1874, that seems the likely date of the present volume.
