Bulawayo: Books of Rhodesia,, 1973. Dj is just starting to discol on spine & front cover. Book has gift inscription on verso of ffep. Illus eps, 54pp. Among the many accomplishments of Rhodes was the building of a considerable mileage of his proposed Cape-to-Cairo railway. In 1907, when the author traveled over it from the Cape, through Rhodesia and across the Victoria Falls bridge, the rail head was at Broken Hill (Zambia's Kabwe). Here and there, beside the line, he observed a tiny mound, a little clump of stones, a cross of wood the human milestones of the Great North Metaled Road. Today, even these milestones, the pegs that counted the cost of conquest, have disappeared. This is a poignantly beautiful story of some of the grimy, shriveled crew who built and ran part of Rhodes's railway in the early years of this century. Reprint.. Hard Cover Illustrated Boards. Printed white boards. 54pp illustrated small 8vo. Reset by the publishers and not a facsimile of the original rare 1934 edition (150 copies only) as often believed but "illustrated and embellisged". (First published in the weekend edition of 'The Argus', Cape Town). The page border design and scraperboard illustrations are superb. The original Author intended the book as a tribute to the BMR and its human milestone marker graves , "Ghosts of men who worked and knew, The fever-swamp, the sickening jar, that came when life was rusted through, Upon the lonely B.M.R." (Cullen Gouldsbury).
