Two books of poetry by the popular children's author A A Milne, featuring his famous anthropomorphic character, Winnie the Pooh. Both volumes are charmingly illustrated, with the noted pen and ink drawings by E H Shepard. 'Now We Are Six' is a first edition (1927), with 'When We Were Very Young' being a fourth edition, issued four weeks after the first edition (1924). Milne was a prolific author and is now best-remembered for his creation of Winnie-The-Pooh and his many friends. This set of best-selling works comprises of two poetry collections, 'Now We Are Six' and 'When We Were Very Young'. 'Now We are Six' contains thirty-five verses, eleven of which are accompanied by illustrations featuring Winnie-The-Pooh. 'When We Were Very Young' contains forty-four poems, including 'Teddy Bear' which, upon its initial publication in 'Punch' magazine, was the first literary appearance of Winnie-The-Pooh. The introduction to 'When We Were Very Young' implies that the narrator may be Christopher Robin. These works are illustrated by E H Shepard, a popular twentieth century illustrator whose pen and ink drawings were featured in all of Milne's works. A charming set and fantastic opportunity to hold early editions of these children's works featuring a much-loved character. Condition: In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the spines and extremities. Small loss to the cloth at the head and tail of spines. Ink spill to the front board of 'When We Were Very Young'. Fading to the spines. Light rubbing to the front boards. Hinges are strained but firm. Bookplate to the recto of front endpaper to 'When We Were Very Young', 'Betty Hovender'. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper of 'Now We are Six', 'Tom with dear love from Mummy and Daddy Xmas 1927'. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, R M Hovender. A small portion of this endpaper has been removed by a prior owner. Offsetting to the half-title of 'Now we Are Six'. Stamp to the title page of 'Now We Are Six' 'Colonial Library'. Internally, both volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Small loss to the gutter of pages 20-21 of 'Now We Are Six'. Pages are bright with a few scattered spots to pages. Overall Condition: Good.
