Philadelphia.: The People's Publishing Company.. 1869.. 19 maps (several folded) of states and territories in addition to 16 full-page black and white illustrations, 591 pages, 9 x 6 1/2 inches, gilt pictorial lettered cover and gilt lettered spine. The brown "pebbled" covers remain resiliently attached to the text block; light wear to extremities, little soiling to upper edge of cover, front hinge is separated but still attached, 1869 previous owners pencilled name to front paste down and back free endpaper, occasional spotting / soiling to text pages, maps chiefly bright and clean with very occasional spotting. Overall good clean condition. Title page trumpets the book's expansive coverage of "Homes and Fortunes" available in "the Boundless West and Sunny South," detailing in 35 chapters (many featuring maps of the state or territory discussed) the Virtues to the Immigrant of each locale. Text on title page itemizes the topics to be addressed: "Climate, Scenery, Soil, Railroads, Mining Interests, General Resources…Cost of farm lands," etc. etc. resolving with "A Complete History of the Pacific Railroad," detailing particulars of the transcontinental line completed in 1869 (the same year as Goddard's guide) and depicted in a folded (and creased) three-panel map of the U.S. at the front of the book. List of states or territories shown in maps as follows: California, Oregon, Washington, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Eastern and Western Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas. Book was available "by Subscription Only." A potentially useful guide to those seeking opportunity in the West or post-war South. .
