Pitlochry: John Dewar & Sons, (2012). Reprint. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo. Pp. xxxv; 134; (1); (5). This edition with a preface by Ian Buxton. Bound in blue cloth with lettering stamped on spine. A handsome copy in an exemplary dust jacket. This reprints the scarce 1930 Porpoise Press limited edition. Author Thomson, who adopted a nom-de-plume to not offend his mother, a strict teetotaller, died in 1996. An appendix of sorts reprints a Thomas B. Dewar letter to "The National Guardian," March, 1891, on the subject of whisky and its qualities. The dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, archival protector. Bookseller inventory S10191X3D.

Edinburgh, Scotland: The Porpoise Press, 1930. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Blue cloth, paper title label mounted on upper spine panel. Moderate binding lean, light surface wear to cover cloth with a slight nick along lower rear joint and minor rubbing/loss to spine extremities, spine a bit sunned with label somewhat tanned and showing just a sliver of loss along one side. 135 pp. Exceedingly scarce 1st edition (which consisted of only 1,600 copies) issued by Porpoise Press, an imprint founded by the author (George Malcolm Thomson) in 1922, and astonishingly not reprinted until 2006. From that most erudite of malt sites, Whiskipedia: "MacDonald's 'Whisky' is today regarded as perhaps the earliest modern book on whisky and certainly the first to treat the subject from the point of view of the drinker. It provides a passionate and energetic defence of the interests of the consumer against the producers and, well ahead…

Edinburgh: The Porpoise Press, 1930. First Edition of 1,600 copies. Hardcover. Good/Good. 135 p. 19 cm. Map of distillers. Blue cloth with paper label on spine. In mylar-covered dustjacket. Jacket has chipped spine ends and light wear elsewhere, dampstains to both panels. Cloth is marked on both sides and lower spine. Stain to edge of rear endpaper. Book's corners a bit bumped Porpoise Press was founded by the author, MacDonald/Thomson, in 1922. Surprisingly, this distillation of whisky wit was not reprinted until 2006. The malt site Whiskipedia states "MacDonald's 'Whisky' is today regarded as perhaps the first modern book on whisky and certainly the first to treat the subject from the drinker's point of view." The author promotes single malt whisky over blends and defends the interests of consumers over producers. Thomson earned the nickname of Scotland's "best-hated man" while only 28 in the '30s.
