Boston: Ticknor and Company, 1887. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Houghton Mifflin & Co. appears on the spine as publisher. Their imprint, Ticknor and Company, appears on the title page as publisher. No additional printings indicated. Minor wear and bumping to the spine ends and corners. Light spotting to bottom edge. Top edge gilt. Contemporary ownership name in pencil on the blank page following the front endpapers (Amasa Howard 1889) and also on the title page (name without date). Dr. Amasa Howard was a Dartmouth Medical School graduate and lived in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. 258 pages with Appendix. The Preface states the intent of the book: "It is the purpose of this work to present opinions of European and American authorities upon the conduct of the Game of Whist; to give the history of French, English, and American leads and inventions; to show in what respect the practice in play of former time has been superseded by that of the present; and to apply the instructions of the best writers and players, from Folkstone to Trist, to the proper development of either method of play in vogue at any of the clubs in this country." A nice, clean copy of this scarce first edition..
