Red cloth boards, title stamped in white over blue, light wear to top edge of spine. The sixth printing, printed "October, 1940," as stated on the copyright page. Solid text block, free of any marks or notations. (Newcomb 10) In publisher's sixth state dust jacket, with "Sixth Large Printing" statement on front cover, $2.00 price on front flap, some chipping along top edge, previous bookseller's tag on front panel, an overall bright example. Why England Slept is an expansion of John F. Kennedy's Harvard Thesis, which examines England's lack of preparedness for the rising threat of World War II.

Synopsis

Why England Slept is the published version of a thesis written by John F. Kennedy while in his senior year at Harvard College. Its title was an allusion to Winston Churchill's 1938 book While England Slept, which also examined the buildup of German power.
