"It is not too far from the truth to say that I am an Episcopalian because I was bribed into being one! It was a persuasive proposition put to me by my friend down the street who had joined the ranks of a newly launched boys' choir in the Episcopal Church in the California town where I lived. I was twelve years old, and the choir needed recruits. Whether my friend was authorized to put the matter to me in just the way he did I now have some doubt. His method was nevertheless successful - indeed. far beyond his expectations. The choir was due to make its debut on Christmas Eve. Then as a reward for the long weeks of preparation and rehearsal its members were to be taken shortly after Christmas for a visit to San Francisco, some four hundred miles away, for a glamorous visit to Chinatown and kindred delights. What could be simpler, my friend insisted, than to spend a few weeks practicing hymns and anthems, join the Christmas debut and the subsequent San Francisco excursion and then shake the dust of the Episcopal Church off my feet as soon as afterwards as decency would permit?..." - Chapter One from Why I Am An Episcopalian
