1882. Hardcover. Good. Unpaginated album with 32 leaves. 30 cm. Brown cloth with decorative cover, bevelled edges. Corners worn, tears in front hinge, white stains and dampstains to exterior. Cover is separating from block. First leaf has ink inscription "Wild Flowers of Newfoundland 1882" with the quote "How green you are, and fresh, is this old world." 25 watercolour illustrations of flowers, 2 loose, 9 drawn directly into the book, 14 inserted. One is signed "B. Brown April 1878."
The "B. Brown" who signed the Apple Blossoms illustration is Blanche Brown (1850-1918) who married Charles Speare Pinsent (1838-1914) in 1883. Only one of these illustrations is signed by her but the pencil captions on the other drawings are in similar handwriting. The artist is talented and the flowers recognizable. The quotation on the first page is from Shakespeare's King John, Act III, Scene 4. The paintings are captioned: Apple blossoms, Iris, Flower of Tree Cranberry, Tree Cranberry found at Topsail, Orchid, Common violet and fern, Ground Ivy, Wax Flower, Kalmia, Wild Cherry Blossom, Indian Tea, Crackerberry Blossom, Berries [of the crackerberry], Harebell, Rose, [Unnamed], Snake Root ? Lily, [Unnamed], [Unnamed], [Unnamed], [Unnamed], Water Lily, Berry of plant [of the Water Lily], [Unnamed], Wild Snap Dragon.
