Black and white illustrations throughout. Pages are moderately tanned with noticeable foxing throughout. Heavy cracking to hinges, causing boards to be loose. Slight crinkling to paper at gutters, however binding remains firm. Illustrations are moderately tanned with some foxing. Thumb-marking present throughout. Boards have visible edge wear with corner bumping. Moderate tanning to spine and edges with some crushing to spine ends. Gilt lettering is darkened. Fraying to spine edges. Heavy black marks overall. Book is bowed and forward leaning.

Very good, 1941 reprint of 1938 original, no d/j, green clothbound boards with cream spine (some scuffing & chipping) & gilt spine titling; text block firm, pages crisp, some foxing (appropriately enough) on edges and endpapers.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (1905-1990) was a British naturalist, an illustrator, art teacher and a children's author under the pseudonym ""BB"". He won the 1942 Carnegie Medal for British children's books. Written on the eve of the Second World War, the novel follows the life of a young fox named RufusÑand while it does stick to the conventions of the genre in this regard, it does so quite capably, painting a beautiful picture of the idyllic pre-industrial English landscape and its wild inhabitants.
