About This Item
1852 Wild Sports of Southern Africa Harris Big Game Hunting Illustrated Binding
The first book written exclusively of only big game hunting!
William Cornwallis Harris was a 19th-century English explorer who is best remembered for his voyages to South Africa. In 1836, Harris ventured to South Africa where he spent nearly two years hunting antelope and following the leads of Matabele people. One of the defining traits of Harris, which differentiated him from other hunters, was that he illustrated the large African animals that he hunted, many of which were remarkably accurate for the time.
The events of this expedition were published in a book entitled 'Wild Sports of Southern Africa' a work that featured Harris's own illustrations of animals and tribal people. And, while this book is fascinating, it is often considered to be the very first book written exclusively of big game hunting!
This 1852 fifth edition includes the complete collection of Harris's color plates and a map bound in fine leather!
