About This Item
The special centenary edition published by The Folio Society in London : 2008. The Book is in Fine unread condition. The original tissue paper protecting the book is still present. Strictly limited to 1,000 numbered copies, this is number 558. The book is handbound in quarter vellum, blocked on the spine in 22-carat gold, with vellum tips and paper sides blocked in three shades of metallic foil. Each copy contains a limitation spread with a tipped-in etching, hand-printed under the artist's supervision and signed by him with the limitation number. New illustrations have been created by Charles van Sandwyk, and the book now contains 16 colour plates, all tipped in by hand, with gold edges and exquisite gold borders. Forty new pen-and-ink drawings have been added, including chapter heads and tails, as well as many hand-drawn captions. The newly designed endpapers showing an architectural plan of Toad Hall have been printed by letterpress. The calligraphy has been printed letterpress by the Logan Press. Gilded top edge, 280 pages. Book size: 13" x 9¾". Presented in the near fine publisher's original cloth-bound solander box with gilt lettered title label. Loosely inserted is the very scarce publisher's 4 page flyer which has coloured illustrations on each page. The postscript to the flyer states: 'the drawings in this letter were made especially for it, and have never been printed anywhere else'. Very scarce with such attributes. A wonderful production celebrating the 100th anniversary of the the title's first publication. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
Synopsis
The Wind in the Willows is a classic of children's literature by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a pastoral version of England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie. The Wind in the Willows was in its thirty-first printing when then-famous playwright, A. A. Milne, who loved it, adapted a part of it for stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929.
