Some general thumbing and spotting to most pages. The hand colouring is still bright and vivid throughout. Dis-bound, but complete, in original fawn card boards, printed in black. The boards are rubbed and worn, making some the the printed area quite faint, and there are a few stains. Previous owner names and gift inscriptions, one dated 1820, on the inner front board. ---- Rare in first edition. Worldcat lists just 3 copies of this 1820 first edition, one in the UK, that in the Renier collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and 2 in the USA; The Eloise Ramsey collection at Wayne University in Detroit, and a rebound copy in the Bloomington Lilly Library at Indiana University. --- The author name, Mrs Poole (active between 1808 and 1823) is supplied by Marjorie Moon in her checklist of Harris publications. Aside from some brown marking to one page, this is generally a very good copy, illustrated throughout with Shepard`s beautiful line drawings. Finely bound in recent full dark green morocco leather binding, spine with raised bands, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Top edge gilt. Original dark green cloth front cover, showing Toad, Ratty and Mole, all in gilt, bound in at rear. ----- The thirty eighth edition overall, this is the first to feature the wonderful drawings by Shepard which haven't been out of print since. After his drawings for the A. A. Milne Pooh books, these are Shepard's most enduring, & endearing, illustrations.

(7.7 x 5.4 inches). 336pp. No publisher on title page, just the date year printed on the verso and a stuck in paper label of Caves Book Co. on rear blank free endpaper. The title page has the title, author name and blurb 'at this point, it looked like curtains for james bond; he was skimping on his work, gambling, wenching, and on the edge of becoming a security risk' (sic). Blue cloth binding with silver lettering to the spine. Publishers sewn-in blue silk bookmark. The dustwrapper is printed in blue to the front panel, showing Bond holding his gun, between lettering and a target design. Spine lettered in blue. No other printing to the wrapper. ----- A rare curiosity.

Minor foxing and creasing to some pages but otherwise a very good copy in recent full deep red morocco binding, gilt ruled borders on boards. Spine with raised bands, compartments decorated with gilt stamps of The Mad Hatter and playing cards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt.
