Description:
London, , c.1898. A collection of witches, ghouls, a cat, and other characters with a mountain view in the background. This is a preliminary sketch for the published drawing that accompanied "The Lay of St Aloys. A Legend of Blois" that appeared on page 465 of "Ingoldsby Legends". Rackham had recently "developed his gift for drawing witches, gnomes, fairies, and anthropomorphized trees and brought them to a pitch of vivid characterization, sometimes with an unsettling frisson of horror" clearly visible in this sketch (ODNB). Ink and pencil on wove paper. Sheet size: 25 x 19.4 cm. Excellent condition. Presented in a black wooden frame with UV protective glass.

Original Watercolor Drawing from "The Ingoldsby Legends." RACKHAM, Arthur, [artist]. "Witches and Warlocks, Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls". [London: J.M. Dent, 1907]. Original fine pen and ink and watercolor from "The Ingoldsby Legends." Watercolor measures 228 x 152 mm. Frame measures 19 x 15 inches. Signed 'ARackham' on lower right corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. Image is as the title states, of a group of witches and warlocks, ghosts, goblins and ghouls, mainly in greys, blacks and some blue tones. Some minor professional restoration to edges, not affecting image. Overall a very beautiful original painting. First published, as a black and white drawing, in the 1898 J.M. Dent edition of "The Ingoldsby Legends" (page 465). Rackham undertook a 'careful overhauling' of the book in which 'many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again...' Accordingly, this drawing was reproduced, now in colour, opposite page 396 in the 1907 edition of "The Ingoldsby Legends" (J.M. Dent and E.P. Dutton). The illustration, being one of 24 colour plates within the 1907 edition, accompanies 'The Lay of St. Aloys' which is subtitled 'A Legend of Blois'. Latimore and Haskell,. Riall,. HBS 67793. $16,500
