New York: Published at the Office of Marie Louise Hankins' Pictorial Family Newspaper, 1861, 1861. First edition. Wright II, 1092; Sabin 30228; Hamilton, Early American Book Illustrators, 1696. Cloth well worn; lacking the rear free endpaper; a decent copy.. 8vo, original blind-stamped red cloth, gilt decorations and lettering. Two frontispieces and 32 plates, all printed on pale green paper.
Although now relegated to obscurity (she is not recorded in any standard biographical dictionary - in book form or online), Mary Louise Hankins was apparently a formidable one-woman band in her day: she published and edited her own newspaper; she was the author, illustrator, and publisher of numerous books; and she was a tireless self-promoter. This narrative consists of thirty-three sketches of contemporary women, including "Rhoda Alwyn: The Perjured Bride," "Angelina Plump: The Lap-Dog's Mother," "Miss Biddy McKay: The Female Vagrant," "Lillie Bell: The Female Writer," etc., all of whom Hankins maintains are drawn from real life. The illustrations are clumsy but have the zest one would expect from Ms. Hankins. The final four pages include advertisements for her newspaper and other publications and want-ads for female canvassers to sell them.
