Elaborate black leather with gilt on front, back, and spine. Text block has gilt all edges. 17 of 18 B&W illustrated plates are intact, as is protective tissue. 18th plate (Bathesheba) is chipped at edges, although the picture itself is intact.
FON inscription dated Christmas 1849.
Front and back covers are entirely loose, leather on spine is very deteriorated and extremely fragile. Leather is worn, especially at edges and corners, where underlying boards are visible. Pages are foxed and stained, with some chipping.
