First edition, library issue. Told from the perspective of his two children, Bweela and Javaka (the future Caldecott Medalist), this poignant story deals with the ways in which anger and love interact in their young family's lives. The two-time Caldecott Honor Artist's seventh book details his children's perspective on their familial interactions, while his stunning art shows that sometimes parents think their children are monsters too… sometimes.

First edition, second state, binding state "C", bearing all of the second state points for the text and the plates (Bienvenue p.4-6). A remarkably clean, bright copy of Baum's masterpiece. The cloth is still light green in color – not faded as on nearly every other copy we've ever seen. Even on those few other copies we have ever examined where the covers have stayed light green, the spine cloth has still faded to a dull green or light tan, but this copy actually still retains the original light green color to the spine! By far, the finest copy we have ever seen in over 40 years of handling this title. The book that inspired the hit 1903 Broadway musical, a series of 40 books, and the beloved MGM musical starring Judy Garland. A cornerstone for any collection of American children's books. One of the most influential American children's books of all time.

First edition. A very early Oz imitation, being released just a year after the publication of Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (which had been the best-selling children's book of 1900). The book features a style imitating the format of the first Oz novel, with line drawings printed in a variety of colors appearing over and around the text of the novel, just as in The Wizard. Gibson's tale is also very reminiscent of Baum's, telling of an isolated little girl on the prairie who is transported into a realm of magic and danger, only to have to find her… Read More
