About This Item

New York: Hurd & Houghton; Sheldon & Co.; W.A. Townsend & Co.; James G. Gregory, 1861. Hardcover. Very Good. Darley, F.O.C.; Gilbert, John. Complete set of Dickens' works, 20 titles in 55 total volumes, sold as a set. A relatively scarce early American edition of this popular set, with all hardcovers bound in 1/2 green morocco leather with colorfully marbled boards, fly-leafs and edges. Engraved frontis illustration in each volume. Published by four publishers (primarily Hurd & Houghton or Sheldon & Co., but also W.A. Townsend and James G. Gregory) during the last nine years of Dickens' life, with title page dates ranging from 1861 - 1871; small 8vos, 17.5cm x 11.5cm. All bindings are tight, sturdy and sound; text and illustrations very good throughout all volumes; all have some amount of wear at spine ends and corners, rubbing to banded spines; gilt titles on spines remain bright and bold; several volumes have a prior owner's bookplate or the remnants of a bookplate fixed to front paste-down. This set includes*: Oliver Twist (2 vols., 1866/1861); Martin Chuzzlewit (4 vols., 1862); David Copperfield (4 vols., 1867); Bleak House (4 vols., 1865/1863/1866/1866); Little Dorrit (4 vols., 1866/1870/1871/1866); Pickwick Papers (4 vols., 1867/1863/1867/1866); Barnaby Rudge (3 vols., 1869/1866/1866); A Tale of Two Cities (2 vols., 1863); Our Mutual Friend (4 vols., 1866); Nicholas Nickleby (4 vols., 1861/1867/1867/1867); Great Expectations (2 vols., 1864/1862); The Old Curiosity Shop (3 vols., 1861/1866/1861); Sketches by Boz (2 vols., 1864); Hard Times (2 vols., 1863); Dombey and Son (4 vols., 1869/1868/1869/1869); Uncommercial Traveller (1869); Christmas Books (2 vols., 1866); Pictures from Italy & American Notes (2 vols., 1865); Edwin Drood (1871); Master Humphrey's Clock, New Christmas Stories, General Index of Characters and their Appearances, Familiar Sayings from Dickens's Works (1870). *Dates are as stated on copyright page. Curiously, the dates are not the same and most are not consecutive. If there is variation in stated date, they are listed above in order respective to the volume number, i.e. vol. 1 date/vol. 2 date/vol. 3 date, etc. Books dated 1861 are published by either W.A. Townsend or James G. Gregory; 1862-1865 published by Sheldon & Co.; 1866-1871 published by Hurd & Houghton.
