About This Item

London: William Pickering. Hardcover. Good+. A New Edition: by Basil Montagu, Esq." The most desirable edition of Bacon's works, this set in a contemporary binding by W.&E. Pickering of Bath; 3/4 brown leather over marbled boards w/ matching marbled edges and endpapers. Good plus; boards rubbed, leather scarred, top edges a little darkened. Each volume has the armorial bookplate ("Veritas Vade Sequor") of Robert Rae on the front pastedown and his signature on the first blank page. He must have had an extensive and significant library. I believe this is the Robert Rae born 1795 somewhere near Glasgow, whose son of the same name was one of the founders of the Scottish Temperance movement. Bindings are tight and pages are mostly bright and clean; there are a few places with minimal foxing. Points: there is no frontispiece in vol. 1, Essays (1825); facsimile letter appears after table of contents. Letter is foxed, but there is very little in the text around it. The folding plan of 'Advancement of Learning' in vol. 2, 1825 (following contents) has been misfolded and is browned at the edge but not torn. The first page of text in vol. 1 is labelled Vol. III; that of vol. 2 labelled Vol. I; that of vol. 3 has a tiny '3'. These three printed by "Thomas White, Printer,/Johnson's Court." Vol. 4, Natural History, 1826, has a frontis (somewhat foxed) of Bacon and an engraved fly-title page before the text. Printed by "Thomas White, Printer,/11, Crane Court." Vol. 5, 1826, has "Thomas White, Printer,/Crane Court." in the rear only; obverse of title page is blank. Vol. 7, 1827, has a frontis w/ 3 images. Vol. 8 has an engraved facsimile of the 1620 title page as a frontis. In vol. 9, 1828, Thomas White has moved back to Johnson's Court. Vol. 12, 1830; this and succeeding vols. have the printer's imprint: "C. Whittingham, Tooks Court,/Chancery Lane." This was Whittingham the younger, whose uncle and later partner had founded the Chiswick Press, which he was to take over on his uncle's retirement. It was the beginning of a long and very productive relationship between Whittingham and Pickering. Vol. 14 was published 1831; vol. 15 appeared in 1834, along with the final volume, 'The Life of Francis Bacon' by Montagu, numbered the reverse of usual, with the preface in Arabic numerals, and 498 pp. of text in Roman numerals entirely, followed by many unnumbered pages of notes, and an index to the notes. This vol. has the printer's imprint in the rear only, and the sheets are labelled 'Vol. XV', as are the sheets in the other vol. 15.
