Condition: See description

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1919-20. 37 volumes, octavo. Attractively bound in recent dark blue morocco, spines gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, single line rules to boards and top edges gilt, others untrimmed. With etched frontispiece portrait by William Strang in Volume I; 'Map of the Wessex of the Novels and Poems' in Volume II. An excellent set with some occasional light foxing. The Mellstock Edition, a deluxe edition limited to 500 copies signed by the author on a preliminary leaf in Volume 1. Initially discussed as early as July 1914, the start of World War I halted production and the actual publication did not begin until December 1919. The edition name is a reference to the mythical "Mellstock" of Hardy's fiction, a combination of the tiny Dorset hamlet Stinsford with the Higher and Lower Bockhamptons. At Stinsford his grandfather was a founder of the church "quire," the group of musicians who played for services; the churchyard contains the remains of both Hardy's wives, Emma Gifford Hardy and Florence Dugdale Hardy, as well as Hardy's heart, the rest of his body having been interred in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey. A very handsomely bound set. Purdy, pp. 287-288.
