Full brown morocco, signed by René Kieffer, with narrow inlays in darker brown, and a wide gilt band, tooled with a pattern of triangles, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Spine slightly darkened, otherwise fine. Matching slipcase. Printed on vélin teinté, this is one of 50 copies with a suite of the wood engravings on japon pelure. The 41 engravings in the suite are mounted and bound in at the end.

The spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt. Compartments fully ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Elaborate Persian fan design to boards. Inner Dentelles fully decorated in gilt, surrounding red Moire silk centre pieces. Silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owner's neat 4 line inscription, dated 1909, to front blank endpaper. The binding is a little rubbed to the extremities, ths spine faded to a uniform brown colour and the silk endpapers have some minor fraying to the edges but overall this is a highly decorative fine quality leather binding in very good condition.

Marbled endsheets. t.e.g. 8vo (6" x 9"). The Flaubert Edition which is Limited to 500 numbered sets of which this is number 334. Illustrated with illuminated chromolithographic Limitation and Title page and further by tissue-guarded duotone plates after original drawings by eminent French and American artists. A splendid opus of France's most masterfull story teller. This limited edition set was the first complete collection of the authors work to be published in English. Quite scarce. Spines and covers mildly sunned. Covers spines and hinges occasionally rubbed and mildly chipped. Mild chipping to two headpieces. Volume 4 presents an obvious repair at front hinge which has somewhat darkened that area ( covers well attatched). A Very Good, clean, attractive set.

Contemporary full blue polished calf. Spines with five raised bands, each with gilt decorative roll. The compartments are ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Board edges with decorative floral gilt roll. Inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a blue paper coveredslip case which has some minor wear but has done its job of keeping the books protected. The slip case is felt lined and has a beige silk tie pull. The spines are just a touch faded and there are a couple of small scratches but overall this is an attractive and finely bound set of this important collection.

Pastedowns with traces of book label removal. ◆Spine slightly cocked, short split to cloth on rear joint, a little fraying at ends of spine, but the insubstantial binding surprisingly solid. Two small stains to each pastedown (where labels removed), title page lightly browned, leaves a shade less than bright (due to paper quality), other minor imperfections, but an excellent copy internally, clean and fresh with comfortable margins.
