San Francisco: A.L. Bancroft & Company, Publishers, 1882. First edition. Leather bound. 797; 805; 796; 807; 796pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] 3/4 brown calf with marbled paper over boards, gilt tooled spines and red and green leather spine labels, and double gilt ruled borders on the covers. Marbled text block edges and endpapers. Mild rubbing to the extremities. Underlying boards peeking through at the corners. The endsheets have occasional thin cracks along the hinges, and the front pastedowns have a previous owner's bookplate. Professional restoration to the joints and head of spine of volume 1. The hinges of this volume have been reinforced as well. The front endpaper of volume 3 is cracked along the hinge, and the hinge is soft. There is a very thin loss from the leather at the head of the spine of volume V, and the front board of this volume is detached at the head. Volume I: 6 fold-out maps. Volume II: 1 fold-out map; 1 fold-out chart. Volume IV: 1 fold-out map. Volume V: 2 fold-out maps. The first 5 volumes from the exhaustively researched series of works in 39 volumes on the western half of North America. Wright/Howes describes the work, as a "Colossal co-operative undertaking; nothing approaching it has ever been attempted in this country." Howes B91.
