This set is limited to 530 sets. Published over a decade and eventually reaching a 30th volume by 1936, this set being complete to date, through volume 25. Manaton Edition. Bound in quality vellum bindings. Printed on quality rag paper with large font. Gilded spines. In VERY GOOD condition, with some general usage wear/rubs, and some external stains typical to vellum, as shown. These tale up 46 inches of shelf space. 9 inches tall. Printed on quality rag paper, that is fresh, bright, and clean. No writing. The hinges are 100% fully attached. This is a sophisticated set as four volumes are from set number 226, and have less rubbing to the spines, one from number 164, the rest from number 523. A rare autographed set. These display beautifully. Provenance: Purchased from the late Peter Howard of Serendipity Books circa 2006, listed for sale 2019. Finely bound by Stikeman for Charles Scribner's Sons, in 3/4 green crushed morocco stamped in gilt to spines and boards. Five raised bands. Top edges brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spines sunned. Some light shelfwear to corners of several volumes. Approximately five volumes with minor chips or snags to crowns. Four volumes with very subtle repairs to the outer joints. Gilt remains bright and set presents well. Trained to be a lawyer, John Galsworthy turned instead to writing. Born in Surrey, England and educated at Oxford, Galsworthy traveled around the world rather than practice law. On these travels he met Joseph Conrad, and the two men become life-long friends. London: J.M. Dent, 1921-1922. All five volumes are from J.M. Dent’s Popular Edition of John Galsworthy titles and were Galsworthy’s personal copies which were used as setting copies for the printer. The books included are (1) Tatterdemalion, which John Galsworthy intended to separate the short stories and scatter them in different volumes of the limited signed edition by writing a full page: “Note for printers: The stories in this volume are revised for the various volumes to which that are attached for the Limited Collected Edition. See index pages sent. Notes will be attached to the volumes dealing with the original dedications. J. G.” with significant deletions, annotations and corrections in ink by Galsworthy throughout the book; (2) Five Tales - with a significant number of ink corrections and deletions in his hand.
