The set consists of History of England, complete in five volumes, vols. I & II are 7th editions dated 1850; vols. III & IV are first editions dated 1855 and vol. V also a first edition dated 1861; Critical Essays complete in 3 volumes, new edition dated 1878; Miscellaneous Writings in two volumes, first editions dated 1860, vol. I with an engraved portrait frontispiece; and Speeches in 1 volume, first edition dated 1854. Fine, uniform bindings by Maclehose, Glasgow, of full polished calf with green and red spine labels, ornate gilt decoration to the spines which have five raised bands, gilt ruled border to the boards, gilt dentelles. All edges marbled, matching marbled end papers. Generally in very good/fine condition, unfaded, evidently kept in an enclosed bookcase for most of their lives, very slight wear to a few bindings. Contents clean and tight, marbled endpapers, pages clean and crisp, no foxing, no inscriptions. Provenance: The Harrison Family, Helensburgh. An outstanding set.. First and Later Editions. Hardcover.
