Works of Mrs. Anna Brownell Jameson - 8 Volume Set (1885 Dark Blue Half Leather)
Works of Mrs. Jameson, from the last London Edition. Published in 1885 by Houghton Mifflin (Boston). Hardcover, half leather bindings. Eight volumes in total, size is approximately 16mo, about 6.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide, in dark blue fine grained leather that features gilt tooling to the spine as well as marbled boards, textblock edges, cover edges, and endpapers. Approximately 400 pages in each volume, which primarily consist of commentary and criticism on Christian Art. Mrs. Jameson's most memorable work being "Sacred and Legendary Art". Previous owner bookplate on the front endpaper with library inventory numbers, and the same owner's name appears in red pencil in two other places of each and every volume. That owner was Caroline McCullough Everhard who served as President of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association in the 1890's.
Beautiful set with wear such as scratches to the covers, bumped corners, chips to the marbled edges, and moderate rubbing of the leather to the spine heads, spine tails, edges, and especially the corners. "Sketches of Art Literature and Character" shows the most wear and imperfections as the spine tail has been distorted on the bottom, the front board has impressions and scratches, and the rear foreedge has a chip; it seems this volume was likely dropped or mishandled, but it is still intact and sound. "Legends of the Madonna" has a chip of the spine head missing and this volume shows the most edge wear and rubbing to the leather and bumped corners. "The Diary of an Ennuyée" has a hard nick to the rear foreedge and Volume II of "Sacred and Legendary Art" has a nick to the top edge. Aside from the previous owner's bookplate and red pencil markings, there is no writing to the text and the bindings are tight. Overall considering the age, this half leather bookset is in Very Good condition.
