About This Item
The Jefferson Press, Boston, n.d. (early 20th century). Good. Present are 8 volumes of a possible 10 volume set; because volume 1 is missing, bibliographical information is scant. It is a beautiful edition, half-bound in leather with gold-veined marbled boards, TEG and gilt lettering on spines, but it is not the "Deluxe" limited ed. of 1908. Gauffered edges suggest it to be a kind of first ed. The volumes are not numbered on spine or within. The titles in the first un-numbered volume, chosen as first because of frontis. portrait of the author, are: "'Virginibus Puerisque' and Other Papers," "Memories and Portraits," and "Familiar studies of Men and Books; " the next volume comprises: "Treasure Island," and "Black Arrow;" the next is entitled, "The Wrecker;" next comes "An Inland Voyage'" "Travels With A Donkey," "The Amateur Emigrant," "The Silverado Squatters," and "Across the Plains with Other Memories and Essays," the next volume includes "St. Ives," "The Misadventures of John Nicholson," "The Story of a Lie," and "The Body Snatcher;" the following contains "The Wrong Box," "Island Nights Entertainments," and The Ebb-Tide," co-authored with Lloyd Osbourne; the next volume features "The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables," "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," and "Prince Otto"--frontis. is photo showing Richard Mansfield in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," dated 1908; the last volume extant comprises "The Master of Ballantrae," "Weir of Hermiston," and "Poems." The bindings of all volumes are firm; the paper of fine quality, strong and only mildly age-toned with no foxing; there is some bumping of corners and rubbing at the crowns and feet of the spines, with an occasional scrape or ding; the only ill. are the frontispieces, which are usually reproductions of paintings depicting a scene in one of the stories.
