This is an unread copy of World War I : The Definitive Visual History, written by H.P. Willmott, the British military historian, author, and Sandhurst lecturer. It was a best-seller when it was initially published in 2007; this is the soft cover edition, published in 2009. It's a must-have for anyone wanting to know more about the Great War--the war that changed everything.

It starts with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and ends with the Treaty of Versailles. It includes some of the war's most prominent battles, such as the Somme and Verdun, with direct accounts from soldiers and civilians. It discusses the key players, and weaponry and equipment--and the effect it had on different sections of society.

Each chapter begins with a map and visual timeline to help explain why, when, where, and how things happened, and it goes into exhaustive detail. There is also a list of commemorations and memorials.

This is a visually stunning book that contains hundreds of photographs, many seen for the first time here. It's beautifully designed and produced. Much of it is in sepiatone.
