About This Item
Boston, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1991. First Printing [Stated]. Trade paperback. Good. vii, [1], 280 pages. Ink notations on page 280. Minor cover wear. Includes chapters by renowned historians, including Stephen E. Ambrose, Colonel T. N. Dupuy, W. A. Swanberg, Martin Blumenson, Richard Wheeler, and Thomas Fleming. Stephen Ward Sears (born July 27, 1932) is an American historian specializing in the American Civil War. Sears is a graduate of Oberlin College. As an author, he has concentrated on the military history of the American Civil War, primarily the battles and leaders of the Army of the Potomac. He was employed as editor of the Educational Department at the American Heritage Publishing Company. This is one of The American Heritage Library series. For nearly four decades American Heritage has made a particular point of insuring that the Second World War was indeed a war that history will honor. Its pages have portrayed the many dimensions of this greatest of twentieth-century conflicts and have cast the struggle in many perspectives, some of them unique. Some authors have put the great battles in perspective, such a the epic fight for Guadalcanal or the mammoth airdrop at Arnhem. Others step behind the familiar and explore the little-known--the first flag-raiding on Iwo Jima, or the weird plot to raid Japan with bomb-carrying bats (while Japan was raiding America with paper balloons), or the case of the feckless Nazi saboteurs on Long Island.
