Red cloth with elaborately gilt tooled spine and gilt embossed front board. Top and fore text block edges untrimmed. 4to. A large and heavy volume which will incur an additional charge for overseas delivery. Spine sun-faded, loss at head, bottom quarter of backstrip missing. Text block edges tanned. Bookplate on front pastedown, front hinge cracked. Volume loose. Some foxing throughout, heavier towards prelims. Overall still very presentable.

This comprehensive survey of 18th century France covers a broad cross-section of French society including the nobility, bourgeoisie, military, clergy, and government, as well as discussions of cuisine, theater, and salons. Better than the second edition, since this edition has 21 color chromolithographs in addition to the 351 full-page and in-text woodblock illustrations.
