London: Chatto & Windus, 1889. Octavo, pp. [i-xi] xii [xiii] xiv-xvi [1] 2-525 [526: illustration; printer's imprint] [527: publisher's device] [528: blank] + 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "October, 1889" inserted at rear], 220 illustrations by Dan Beard, original pictorial red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, publisher's monogram stamped in black on rear panel, top edge untrimmed, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in gold. First English edition. The Chatto & Windus edition was published 6 December 1889 as per the author's instructions. The U.S. edition was to have been published 10 December 1889, but copies were apparently released earlier (DLC deposit copy recorded 5 December 1889). At least four contemporary versions of Chatto & Windus catalogues are common to this book, the earliest dated June 1889 (months prior to publication), but are of no apparent significance for establishing a priority of issue.
