Photographers Frank Jay Haynes, and his son Jack Ellis Haynes, ran a portrait studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota. F. Jay Haynes was hired by the Northern Pacific Railroad, in the 1880s, as their official photographer; he was provided with a personal train car, the "Haynes Palace Studio Car," which he used to take portraits of the residents, and to photograph the scenery, along the Northern Pacific route (which included Yellowstone National Park). F. Jay Haynes became, in 1884, the official photographer for Yellowstone National Park, and for over thirty years he photographed Yellowstone. Upon his retirement, in 1916, his son, Jack Ellis Haynes, became the primary photographer of the Haynes photographic business, publishing his father's images, in addition to his own photographs.
